“the white gays got all hyped up for love simon but i see no one talking about the kenyan lesbian movie!!!!” you cracked the code. you did it. the white gays are at it again, not talking about that one foreign indie movie that you can only see for a limited time at independent film festivals. this, as compared to how much they talked about that one multi-million dollar hollywood movie that was widely available in theaters, on itunes, and on dvd. disregarding the fact that people have absolutely been talking about the indie movie and publicly hoping they get to see it and that those posts have an astonishing number of notes for a fucking foreign indie film. has anyone ever told you how smart and insightful you are.

Rafiki, that “Kenyan lesbian film” (the fact that you couldn’t name it is funny af LOL), got banned from Kenyan, where being gay is illegal. The Kenyan state doesn’t recognize LGBT people in general, and there are absolutely no legal protections for them. Rafiki dared to try and give representation to young Kenyan lesbians in a state that and culture that enforces violence against them. In a broader sense, this is extremely important for other LGBT Africans, especially considering the problem of corrective rape against lesbians in “third world” countries (the term corrective rape was coined to describe the climate of sexual violence again lesbians in South Africa, specifically). This movie tried to make a statement in a society wherein LGBT people are silenced. Its as you said Ok, Love, Simon is a multi-million dollar hollywood movie one with a primarily white cast and reach because it came from hollywood.  But we want support for Rafiki BECAUSE we recognize its important and want to see it in theatres all over. LGBT people of color though are so used to having work made with our faces ignored heavily by white LGBT people because, for some reason, it just doesn’t have any appeal to them. Everyone wants more LGBT rep, but there is rarely white people pillaring us. This shit happened with the whole  Moonlight vs CMBYN debacle, and we know it’ll happen again. Rafiki is worlds more powerful than Love, Simon because of what it represents for the future of LGBT people in Africa, specifically the future for young, African lesbians. But again, white LGBT people don’t seem to care much. So yeah, fuck you op.
