The amount of times I see canon trans characters called traps is annoying so here’s a helpful guide
Crossdressing Character type 1: Literally just a gender non conforming character wether it be a tomboy or a guy that likes feminine clothing (ex: Kuranosuke Koibuchi from Princess Jellyfish or Haruhi Fujioka from OHSHC)
Crossdressing Character type 2: Forced Crossdressing. This character does not like the situation they are in and would rather not dress this way at all. (ex. Chihiro Fujisaki from Danganronpa)
“Trap” characters: Crossdressing completely by choice because they are also gnc the difference is they are usually meant to confuse the protag and/or trick the protag until they reveal that they are (usually said word for word) “actually a boy/girl” (ex. Felix Argyle from Re: Zero)
Bishounen/Bifauxen: Basically a boy is looks very feminine and could be mistaken for a tomboyish girl and a girl that is very handsome she could be a prince (ex. Saika Totsuka from OreGairu and Amane Ohtori from Strawberry Panic)
Drag Queen: I don’t have to explain drag queens y’all know who these bad babes are. They were a bit harder to find in anime and manga (ex. Haruhi’s father in OHSHC)
~Magically Transformed into the Opposite Sex~: Literally just that. Usually not by their own choice and usually it’s a male he will magically turn into a girl! Breasts, vagina and all! He’s almost always be embarrassed about being a girl but will eventually embrace female him since he’s stuck with it. He’ll still remind us though. (ex. La Pucelle from MGRP and Saki Uno from Magical Girl Ore)
Transgender Characters: Literally a character who is trans. It may be stated in series (sometimes inappropriately like “she used to be a boy!”) or stated in official material but this is a character who is legitimately trans and calling them any of the above examples is actually transphobic. (ex. Shuichi Nitori from Wandering Son and Yawara Chatora from BnHA)
Now you can definitely headcanon the other types of characters above as trans that’s fine but don’t give authors credit for making “canon” trans characters and ignore actual canon trans characters. Especially canon trans characters who aren’t offensive.
Because I see many anime fandoms need to learn the difference. Reblogging here because I see it a lot in the YS fandom too
Friendly reminder that yesterday when my mom took me to Walmart she left me alone in the toilet paper section and this guy started hitting on me and I said “Sorry, I’m a lesbian.” and he was like “Oh my god I’m so sorry I thought you were a boy.”
